Ode to Minneapolis rock and roll, bitches…
Model/First Lady sings W.B. Yeats
Yeats is one of my favorite poets and, as a general rule, models/actresses tend to really suck when they try to cross over into music, so my expectations of Carla Bruni’s album were really low. But when she opted to use great poems as lyrics, my hopes were raised. And now I can’t get this song out of my head.
Those Dancing Days are Gone
Come, let me sing into your ear;
Those dancing days are gone,
All that silk and satin gear;
Crouch upon a stone,
Wrapping that foul body up
In as foul a rag:
I carry the sun in a golden cup.
The moon in a silver bag.
Curse as you may I sing it through;
What matter if the knave
That the most could pleasure you,
The children that he gave,
Are somewhere sleeping like a top
Under a marble flag?
I carry the sun in a golden cup.
The moon in a silver bag.
I thought it out this very day.
Noon upon the clock,
A man may put pretence away
Who leans upon a stick,
May sing, and sing until he drop,
Whether to maid or hag:
I carry the sun in a golden cup,
The moon in a silver bag.
Now I’m just waiting for it to be used as background music for an Old Navy or iPod/airbook commercial, at which point it will be destroyed for me forever.
The “Rack”
Finally, an “as seen on tv” product for the insane, frightened gun nuts of America. The Rack is a shotgun rack that slides under your mattress so the gun lies flush with the side of your bed for easy access. And easy access means easy killin’, which is what every one who buys this thing is probably dreaming about as he or she sleeps. It costs $40.
Here’s the actual commercial for the product:
“Many people are buying one for each side of the bed!”
Seriously? Sweet Jesus, having a loaded shotgun sitting parallel to me as I lie sleeping scares me more than the extremely unlikely possibility that someone is going to break into my house at night…and that I’ll need to shoot them. And I’d hate to think what I’d do if I had my shotgun nest to me in bed if a dispute about hogging the blankets breaks out!
Product website for anyone interested: the rack.
The Raconteurs: Hands
Supergroups usually suck. This one doesn’t.
The word on the street is that they’re planning on releasing a new album in 2008. I can’t wait. It’s been a year and a half since they released Broken Boy Soldiers.
